Master thesis 2024

The Enzyme Audition: Monitoring the
enzymatic potential of
Neocallimastigomycota and
uncovering a novel isolate from Degu

This Master’s thesis addressed the need to

improve biogas production by enhancing the

degradation of lignocellulosic biomass using

anaerobic gut fungi. Novel fungal strains were

isolated from different herbivorous hosts,

including a previously undescribed taxon, and

compared with existing cultures. An adapted

DNS-based assay was used to measure xylanase,

CMCase, and avicelase activities. The study

demonstrates that functional enzyme screening

is a practical tool for identifying anaerobic gut

fungi with high biotechnological potential.

We are a team of scientists from Austria, Germany and Switzerland working closely together combining microbiology, biotechnology and bioinformatics to investigate potential benefits deriving from the biotechnological usage of anaerobic fungi.
