Bachelor Thesis 2024

Substrate utilization potential of a novel anaerobic
fungal strain.

This bachelor’s thesis focused on assessing and comparing the

enzymatic potential of anaerobic gut fungi. A protocol for

measuring CMCase activity in fungal cultures was optimized, and

total enzymatic activity of three anaerobic gut fungi strains was

tested using wheat straw as substrate. Optimized conditions

enabled reliable detection of enzyme activity with

carboxymethylcellulose, while wheat straw required pre-

treatment to yield measurable results. The study supports

improved identification of enzymatically potent fungal cultures.

We are a team of scientists from Austria, Germany and Switzerland working closely together combining microbiology, biotechnology and bioinformatics to investigate potential benefits deriving from the biotechnological usage of anaerobic fungi.
