Breaking Down Barriers: Boosting Biogas Production through Wheat Straw pretreatment with the Anaerobic Gut Fungus Neocallimastix frontalis

This Master’s thesis evaluated the enzymatic

potential of anaerobic gut fungi for lignocellulosic

biomass pretreatment in biogas production.

Several fungal strains, including a newly isolated

strain, were characterized and compared using

xylanase and CMCase activity assays. Biogas batch

experiments revealed no yield increase after

pretreatment with an anaerobic fungi strain,

whereas a defined enzyme mixture significantly

enhanced biogas production. The results highlight

strong strain-specific differences and suggests a

candidate for future biotechnological applications.

We are a team of scientists from Austria, Germany and Switzerland working closely together combining microbiology, biotechnology and bioinformatics to investigate potential benefits deriving from the biotechnological usage of anaerobic fungi.
